What’s Your Purpose in Life?
One of the saddest aspects of client work is watching many of you drift through life. Maybe you used to feel passion and purpose but have become so mired in eating problems, depression or anxiety, you’ve lost all desire to make something of yourself or be part of making the world a better place. Or, maybe due to trauma or always putting others’ needs before your own, you’ve never given thought to why you’re on this earth.
Of course, we’re here because we were birthed onto the planet and had no choice about it. And by asking why, I don’t mean why you’re here in a spiritual way, though that view is fine, but the fact that you are a unique being and no one who has lived or will live (cloning aside) will lead your particular life ever again. You see the world in a certain way and have special gifts and talents that are distinctively yours and yours alone.
Think about it: What do you want to do with your life? What goals do you wish to pursue or achieve? Age doesn’t matter. There are folks in their 90s charging full speed ahead. What do you want to be remembered for? And, please, please don’t just say you want to be a good person. This copout term is so broad as to be virtually worthless. What do you want to be good at? What goodness do you want to give others or our planet?
Since childhood I’ve wanted to be a teacher and I was for three years. Then life swung me in other directions, and I became interested in politics, humanity, and self-growth, including overcoming my binge-eating disorder. I was nearly 40 when I returned to school to get a masters in social work. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know about psychology, particularly addiction, so that became my mid-life pursuit.
Then, to spread the word, I wanted to teach and write about what I’d learned. I took and still take making this world a better place very seriously. I love having friends and fun. Having a mission precludes neither. In fact, it’s a way to make friends and enjoy life.
Too many clients complain of being bored or lonely but do little about it. There are so many groups and causes needing your help. I guarantee that connecting with them will help you. The amazing thing about volunteering is that you don’t need to be skilled at something. Wherever you volunteer, they’ll teach you what you need to know.
Volunteers are special kinds of people with big hearts and grand visions about how to change the world for the better. You may have been a victim in childhood, but you have the will of an adult now. Please don’t waste time. The world needs whatever you have to offer, and you need to give it to gain direction and strengthen your sense of self.
Best,
Karen
